FAQ's

Got a question about plumbing, heating or Gas?
  • I can smell gas?

If you smell gas you should call the national gas emergency number on 0800 111 999 they will come free of charge within 2 hours and identify whether you have a gas leak.

  • How much is a boiler service?

We charge £60 plus vat to service your boiler. We can do natural gas and lpg regardless of the type of boiler you have. Contact us for any questions related to a boiler service.

  • Do I need a power flush?

Powerflushing is required if your system is full of sludge. Over time system water can deteriorate causing poor circulation through your radiators and some radiators may not heat all. Sometimes areas of pipework will need to be cut out as well and a system filter installed to protect after the flush has been done.

  • Why do my radiators come on when I select hot water only?

If you are getting heat to your radiators when you haven't got it selected on your programmer or timer, you could have a valve passing. This is called a mid position or 3 port valve. This can be easily repaired or replaced for you.

  • What's the banging noise coming from my boiler?

Without visiting your property it's very difficult to diagnose. However we have been to noise issues ranging from the pump or circulatory in your airing cupboards, to air in your system or water hammer.

  • How long should a boiler last?

The age of your boiler dosent really give you an indication of its life span. Different boiler makes and models can keep going from 5 years to 35 years. When fitting new boilers we offer warranty of up to 12years!

  • My sink or basin smells intermittently?

Sometimes you can get a strong sewege smell from your bathroom appliances when a waste trap is not performing as it should or is incorrectly installed. Bathroom wastes must be installed as per the manufacturer and in accordance with British standards. This can be rectified by changing the waste traps/checking the toilet waste has air admittance etc.

  • Do I need a legionella certificate for my rental property?

Landlord gas safety for rental property is mandatory annually. Legionella check however is mandatory but not yet annual. We recommend you have a legionella check every 2 years.

  • Some of my radiators won't get hot?

If some but not all of your radiators are cold you can try a couple of easy checks. Does it get hot at the bottom but not the top? Can the radiator be bled? Is the radiator valve stuck?

  • Can I install a cooker myself?

Sometimes fitting a cooker may seem as simple as just plugging in a bayonet. This is not the case. Tightness tests need to be done for gas leaks, the appliance working pressure needs to be checked, and there are many Gas Safe regulations that cookers or hobs must comply with. We recommend you use a Gas Safe registered engineer for any gas works. Why take the risk of leaving an unsafe appliance?

  • What are the brown patches on my ceiling?

Generally a brown patch on the cielling is the sign of a leak above. The age of the leak can be determined by the shade of brown. If you notice the patch getting larger then you may well have an active water leak and need to call out a plumber.

  • My pilot won't light?

Most new boilers do not have a manual pilot light. If you have an older boiler it could be the thermocouple which is fairly common. We would recommend a Gas Safe registered engineer or plumber to replace it.

  • Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm for my gas fire?

Gas fires can be extremely dangerous in the home. Flues/chimneys can be blocked which can cause combustion issues and CO (carbon monoxide) to spill into a living area. This can and has been fatal, which is why we always recommend having a CO alarm in any property. It is a legal requirement for landlords with tenants.

  • What temperature should I set my thermostat to?

The average room temperature in the UK is 19 degrees centigrade throughout winter months, but this is all down to your own preference. You can have wireless thermostats and smart thermostats so you can control the temperature in individual rooms in your house and even remotely when nobody is home.

Me personally? My wife likes it hot to remind her where she is from......hell, so my house is 23 degrees all year round!
